What Is A Blog?

December 27, 2008

In it’s simplest terms, a blog is a web journal.  The term ‘blog’ actually comes from the combination of two words: web and log.  Think of it as a diary that can be either private, or open to the world.  A blog usually runs in reverse-chronological order, is updated with news, photos, video, links, and journal entries about any number of given subjects, and often-times allows the reader to engage with the blog writer by leaving feedback through comments.  Understand?

This website is a blog.  Each time I write something, the latest update will be featured above the last.  When someone comes to your ‘blog’, they will automatically see the last thing that you have written.  This relevancy and easy ability to update have made blogs the new Brad Pitts and Angelina Jolies of the information superhighway.  They can provide information fast, get a fast return on feedback, and connect you with an audience in a way that has never before been possible for the general public.

Blogs are made to be updated on a regular basis.  Most people do this daily and really get great enjoyment out of having someone interested in what they have to say.  If you think somebody won’t read what you write,  think again.  I have read some pretty bad blogs that draw a decent audience.  Some of the better ones can have a monthly readership into the millions.  A few hundred or thousand is easily obtainable if you take the time to really learn what you are doing.

Am I leaving anything out on what a blog is?  If you have a beter suggestion or definition, or would just like to add to what I have shared, fel free to leave a coment below.
